Overview: Human Resources in Barbados

As of June 2009, the estimated labour force in Barbados stood at 142,700 persons comprising 73,000 males and 69,700 females, with an estimated participant rate of 67%. Results from the Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2009 indicate that the employed labour force totalled 128,300 persons; General Services and Government Services were the major sources of employment providing approximately 27,500 (21.4%) and 26,800 (20.9%) jobs respectively. Other major industries for employment included Wholesale & Retail Trade (13.3%), Tourism (10.8%), Finance, Insurance and Business Services (10.2%) and Quarrying & Construction (9.5%).
