The Diamonds International Substance Abuse Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, Friday March 21st, at the prestigious Westmoreland Golf Club was a resounding success, raising over BDS $100,000 in support of the Teen Intervene Program. With final contributions still being tallied, the total is expected to reach BDS $114,000, all of which will go directly toward assisting young individuals struggling with substance abuse.

For 28 years, Diamonds International has been the main sponsor and a key partner of the Substance Abuse Foundation, which supports Verdun House and Marina House in their mission to provide rehabilitation and recovery services. Over the years, this tournament has raised close to BDS $2 million, directly benefiting rehabilitation programs and providing much-needed resources for individuals on the path to recovery.

This year’s tournament saw participation from several notable players and sponsors. JP Magnier funded and played on the Laughing Waters team. Derrick Smith sponsored Tanglewood, while Sir Martyn Arbib supported Soulcombe. Williams Caribbean Capital, led by David Staples, was also a key team sponsor.

The Junior Team, sponsored by Barbados Light and Power & Barbados First Citizens, claimed first place in the tournament. The team featured young talent including Mariella Young (16), Aiden Buchanan (16), Joshua Sombrano (14), and Connor Proudfoot (11).

In second place was TD Reinsurance, represented by Charles Edey, The Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes, Steve Buckmaster, and Shamarh Brookes. The third-place team, Terra Caribbean, included Senator Andrew Mallalieu, Richard Moorjani, Andre Kelshall, and Bruce Bayley.

Among the distinguished participants was golf legend Ian Woosnam, winner of the 1991 Masters. His presence added to the prestige of the tournament and further elevated the competitive atmosphere.

The event also welcomed The Honourable Minister Wilfred Abrahams, Minister of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs. Minister Abrahams, playing in his first-ever golf tournament, not only took to the course but also delivered remarks and assisted with the prize-giving ceremony.
